Look Interested, Not Desperate

Look Interested, Not DesperateLook Interested, Not DesperateA job interview is like dating - you want to seem interested but not overly interested to the point where youre undesirable - available but in demand, agreeable but with limits.People look for jobs for all sorts of reasons. You may want more money. You may want to work in a field that offers more growth. You may want to move to another part of the country. Often, a job seeker just wants to get away from her boss. These are all acceptable reasons to look for a new career opportunity, but theyre all wants as opposed to needs. When you need a job, its a bit of a different story.Even in the $100K+ job market, there are moments of desperation. Strategically, that can be a problem because looking and acting like a desperate job seeker can be a huge turnoff to kompetenz employers. Its like dating. You want to seem interested but not overly interested to the point where youre undesirable - available but in demand, agreeable but with limits.By being desperate, youre underselling your value and I dont think thats in your interest, said Mark Grimm, a public speaking trainer and author of Everyone Can Be A Dynamic Speaker. He said it all starts with your self assessment. Figuring out what you can offer a company can help you overcome any anxiety you have toward the needed job.You have to understand what your value is, Grimm said. The employer wants to hear, not arrogance, but a clear sense of what your value is.If youre dating someone you really like, you dont want to scare him away, right? You dont want to appear overeager, said Lisa Panarello, founder and CEO of Careers Advance, a professional training and coaching agency in New York. You dont want to follow up immediately (and) say yes to everything.Dont SettleIf you need a new job, it may be tempting to drop everything if a hiring company comes calling. When the interview is taking place, the hiring manager could lay out responsibilities that are not ideal. If y ou know what youre willing to do, Panarello says, you should make sure you dont agree just for the sake of agreeing - even if you are desperate. That whole Ill-go-anywhere attitude, its not what theyre looking for and its not realistic, she said. You still have to adapt your communication to whatever job youre looking for even if youre willing to come down a peg on salary or title. As the employment manager of the Houstonian Hotel, Club Spa in Houston, Texas, Kay Pyatt has been on the other end of such interviews for years and she can spot desperation from a mile away.Usually, she said, it comes in the form of a candidate who is applying for a particular position but he wants to keep a foot in the door of other less-paying jobs if he doesnt get the first one.Its a little distracting, she said.Pyatt said that secondary job interests are better discussed after theres closure on the first one.Its best in the beginning that you have a plan, she said. Certainly if that doesnt work, we c an look at something else.

6 Unique Job Search Tactics to Try

6 Unique Job Search Tactics to Try6 Unique Job Search Tactics to TryIn the high-stakes competitive sport that is job hunting, how do you get a leg up on your competition?Sometimes, the best approach is for a job seeker to think outside of the box and try some unique job search tactics. So even if youve targeted your career market, your job skills are up-to-par, your resume sparkles, and your interviewing know-how is spot-on, it might still not be enough. Thats where creative job search tactics can come in handy.Take a look at these six unique job search tactics to try1. Get visual. Not all applications have to be of the printed paper resume and deckblatt letter variety. Especially if youre in a visual field, like photography or design, whip up the best possible presentation of your career accomplishments and put it online. You can have a personal website or a digital portfolio that you can refer employers to, andn be sure to post your work on social media sites to show (rather than tel l) what youre truly capable of achieving.2. Network creatively.Networking events are great- except that everyone there is looking to land their next job. Beat out the competition and learn how to network anywhere- and everywhere you go. That lady on line in front of you at your local home improvement store just might know a staffer at the company youre dying to work for. So treat any interaction with someone as a potential networking opportunity. That said, you shouldnt skip out on traditional networking events either, but include some like Meetups, Google hangouts, and alumni groups, too.3. Work for free- sort of.Sure, you need a paying job, but sometimes doing a little pro bono work (especially if it can get your foot in the door) isnt always a bad thing. If you really want to work at one particular company- and you havent heard back from the employer yet- why not show them that youre the one to hire? For example, you might create a Powerpoint presentation showing them some of the ir pain points- and how youd solve them. Or if the company has a slumping social media presence, use your own social media channels to connect with them how you can boost their numbers. While it might appear to be doing work for free to some, what youre actually doing is staging your own audition for the job that shows what you really can do4. Start self-promoting.Self-promotion often gets a bad rap, because most people associate it with bragging. But done correctly, self-promotion can be a mora aggressive way to grab a potential employers attention. Send out a professional Twitter bioor a Twesume (a.k.a. a Twitter resume), marketing yourself, your education, your experience, your specific career field, and even the company youd like to work for. Have other professionals vouch for your work ethic and post their replies on your social media channels.5. Make a match with a ratgeber. At some point in their job search, everyone can use a little career guidance. And thats where a mentor c omes in. Work to find a mentor whose accomplishments you sincerely admire and whom you feel could be an integral part to your job search success. But having a mentor is a two-way street- be sure that you can also offer something in return for your mentors investment of time and energy. You can also consider approaching that person for an externship- spending a few days or more shadowing them to learn more about what they do.6. Be sure to follow-up.Although it might not seem all that unique, a good old-fashioned follow up can go a long way in making you a stand-out job candidate. When you have an interview or other meeting, make your follow-up contact more than just a perfunctory thank you for your time. Instead, cite specific advice or moments in the conversation that were useful to you or shed some insight. That makes you a much more memorable job candidateBrowse Open Flexible JobsJennifer Parris contributed to this post.

Job Searching in a Rural Area Consider Flexible Work

Job Searching in a Rural Area Consider Flexible WorkJob Searching in a Rural Area Consider Flexible Work6Many flexible work options allow you to do yur job from anywhere and to stay fully engaged with your employer and work colleagues. Perhaps best of all, you dont have to relocate to exploit the world of remote job optionsthat are available, no matter where you live.In addition to remote jobs, you may want to consider employment options close to home to capitalize on all of the employment possibilities that are out there. Think about the following suggestions as you go about job searching in a rural areaBroaden your mental horizons.Embracing the idea of working remotely can open up all sorts of new career possibilities, while letting you retain the quality of life that rural or small-town living offers. Take a good hard look at your resume and think about ways you might revise it to highlight talents that emphasize your ability to work from home (e.g., use terms such as highly organ ized, home-based office, gruppe player, collaborative, and self-motivated). Begin searching out companies that may not have been on your radar before.Sharpen your technical skills.Make sure your technological and communication skills are up to speed. Working from home requires, at the very least, a good comfort level with technology. And of course, social mediais an increasingly critical tool, especially for employers that are looking for home-based workers. If youre happily living in the boonies, your geographic location wont make a difference to employers that understand the best tech-savvy candidate for the job doesnt have to be someone in its own backyard.Consider the great outdoors.Living in a remote region often means having greater access to nature and the environment. If working in a natural environment is something that has always held appeal for you, think about looking for jobs that will get you away from a desk and into the outdoors. Environmental and green jobs can be a great way to capitalize on making the most of where you live.Dont rule out your local network.Your local connections may offer a wealth of opportunities for finding flexible work. While technology enables you to go far afield in your job search, your network of friends, family members, neighbors, and colleagues can work just as powerfully in your favor. Consider volunteering with local organizations, seeking out part-time jobs that allow you to get your foot in the door, and asking around to ferret out opportunities that may hiding in plain sight right under your nose.Focus on jobs that let you work from anywhere. At , we break down our flexible job listings by location, including state, city, international location, and jobs with no location requirement. Magistrate Lands Administrative Law Judge Position

Magistrate Lands Administrative Law Judge PositionMagistrate Lands Administrative Law Judge PositionMagistrate Lands Administrative Law Judge PositionBREAKING NEWS Congratulations, if you are invited to the Online Component. We recommend our ALJ Writing Guide to review the 13 ALJ Competencies We also recommend our Structured bewerbungsinterview practice if you are invited to the Structured Interview component of the ALJ Examination. Magistrate Lands Administrative Law Judge PositionPreparation Is Key to Winning a Job as an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ)Julio Johnson served as county attorney and assistant prosecutor, and simultaneously ran a part-time litigation practice, for over 7 years. In his early years as a prosecutor and county attorney, he handled more than 1,000 contested cases and often appeared before an administrative law judge or a judge of the local court. Johnson represented his county board of health in enforcement actions, cooperating and negotiating with state and f ederal agencies on these matters. While working for the county, Johnson oversaw the implementation of an administrative hearing procedure to enforce new regulations while respecting citizens rights.Meanwhile, in his solo practice, he also handed litigation, mainly probate and bankruptcy cases, representing individual and corporate clients.Johnson thereafter served, for an additional 6 years, in a judicial role, as a magistrate for his countys common pleas court. All of these experiences were documented in his resume with specificity, supporting his qualifying experience. In his qualifications narratives, he welches careful to describe both his administrative law experience and his litigation experience in detail, specifying the inclusive months and years of practice and hours per week devoted to each. All told, Johnsons qualifying experience added up to 6 years of full-time Litigation experience as a magistrate plus an additional 7 years of mixed experience, divided equally between A dministrative Law and Litigation. This welches more than enough to satisfy reviewers that Johnson possessed the minimum qualifying experience. He was allowed to take the online exam, scoring well then the proctored, in-person exam and ultimately, the structured interview. In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications in his application, Johnson was prepared to address the 13 judicial competencies OPM tested in the ensuing exam. Johnson was prepared because he had practiced writing accomplishment narratives to address the ALJ competencies. He also studied examples of the various kinds of tests OPM would be using, and completed practice questions. He was prepared to answer interview questions with solid examples of his past experience. The examples were compelling because they elaborated upon experiences already well documented in his resume.ResultsBecause he quantified his qualifying experience in the initial application, and was prepared to address all 13 ALJ competencies in the ensuing exam phases and interview, he joined the new ALJ Register in September 2014 with a high score. But not only were his scores high- his resume presented an excellent record of performance, with a diversity of accomplishments and experiences sufficient to predict his future success as an ALJ. SSA hired Johnson as one of the new registers first selectees, and he was working as an ALJ by January 2015.More Pay for Fewer HoursJohnsons pay as a magistrate was $86,000 per year for more than 70hours per week. Base pay for ALJs ranges from $107,000 to $160,300 locality pay can add up to 35 percent for appointments in expensive cities, such as San Francisco and New York.Johnsons Tips for ALJ Selection SuccessApplying to become a federal Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) has at least one thing in common with being a litigator One must be thoroughly prepared. For Julio Johnson, preparing for each stage in the examination process paid off. Even though he had no experience with, or knowledge o f, Social Security law, he scored well on the exam and was among the first selected for a job in a distant city, says Nicole Schultheis, ALJ Application Consultant for The Resume Place, Inc.Johnson also made shrewd tactical choices to maximize his chances. Johnson was clever enough to select all geographic regions when he applied, to improve his range of job offers. Although he did not receive his first-choice city at the outset, he was soon able to transfer to an opening closer to home.Another key to Johnsons success was his unstinting attention to detail. Candidates must read the announcement closely, make sure their resumes reflect the right type of work experience, and in all other respects adhere to the instructions provided, says Schultheis. Johnson agrees. It helps many ALJ candidates to have access to in-depth information about the federal ALJ resume, OPMs selection processes, and the USAJOBS application. The Resume Place, Inc. just published The ALJ Writing Guide, 2nd Edition to meet this need. You might also want to attend our ALJ webinar or consider our package of ALJ application preparation services.

The Power of Dual-Fuel Diesel Engines

The Power of Dual-Fuel Diesel Engines The Power of Dual-Fuel Diesel Engines The Power of Dual-Fuel Diesel Engines The abundant reserves of gas in the U.S. are also making companies think more about dual-fuel engines as a long-term solution. Natural gas/selbstzndermotor dual-fuel engines offer a path toward meeting current and future emissions standards with lower fuel cost. However, numerous technical challenges remain, which require a greater understanding of the in-cylinder combustion physics. For example, due to the high compression ratio of diesel engines, substitution of natural gas for diesel fuel at high load is often limited by engine knock and pre-ignition. Additionally, increasing the natural gas percentage in a dual-fuel engine often results in decreasing maximum load, says Anthony J. Marchese, professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.Knocking out the KnockWhen operating at part load, dual-fuel engines can suffer from excessive incomplete combustion of the natural gas, which results in increased tailpipe emissions of methane and other pollutants. Another problem with natural gas is that chemical reactivity of the pipeline quality fuel can vary greatly from day to day, or region to region, depending on the percentage of ethane and propane in the natural gas. Prof. Anthony J. Marchese at the Engines and Energy Laboratory. Image Colorado State UniversityWith natural gas, you dont know exactly how reactive the fuel is since the composition can vary from nearly 100 percent methane high resistance to knock to less than 90 percent methane greater propensity for knock, says Marchese. Therefore, understanding the phenomena that lead to engine knock in a dual-fuel engine is very important for designing engines and control systems.Through combined modeling and experiments, Marchese and his research team uncovered a new regime of engine knock observed in dual-fue l engines, which is different from the knock observed in spark-ignited engines. Specifically, we observed detonation of the natural gas/air mixtures in regions between the individual diesel spray jets, he states. This was a surprise and suggests there may be ways to minimize knock in dual-fuel engines by designing the diesel injectors in a different way. Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition Marchese teamed up with Woodward Corporation to explore a low-temperature combustion strategy known as reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI), which uses early diesel injection to create a reactivity gradient leading to staged auto-ignition, from the highest reactivity region to the lowest. Natural gas/diesel RCCI has proven to yield high efficiency and low emissions at moderate load, but has not been realized at the high loads possible in conventional diesel engines, says Marchese. To obtain better agreement with experiments, we constructed a reduced dual-fuel mechanism using a two-component diesel surrogate. A sensitivity study was then performed on various model parameters, resulting in improved agreement with experimental pressure and heat release rate. Woodward Corporation has also developed an engine control unit (ECU) with a high-speed, on-engine processor and control algorithms to take cylinder pressure for each cylinder, for each cycle, and convert this high-speed information into combustion metrics such as center of combustion, rate of pressure rise, and peak pressure. With this data available, the ECU is able to control combustion phasing in RCCI combustion- which is a key enabler to realizing this technology in practical applications, notes Greg Hampson, senior principal engineer for Woodward Corporations Technology Group in Loveland, CO. Additionally, the combustion metric feedback can be used to not only maintain good combustion phasing during changes in substitution rates, but also when the fuel quality changes, and early detection of con ditions leading to knock, thus limiting the gas/diesel substitution rate to a safe level, rather than relying on a conventional knock sensor. NH3 energy engine. Image Iowa Energy CenterDont Forget AmmoniaNorm Olson, biomass and alternative fuels program manager at the University of Iowas Iowa Energy Center in Ames, has been conducting research on dual-fuel ammonia (NH3)/diesel, NH3/ dimethyl ether (DME) and NH3/hydrogen (spark ignition) engines. The use of NH3 as a fuel is a relatively novel concept, especially in dual-fuel applications. Carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and particulate emissions are significantly reduced when NH3 is burned as a fuel.NH3 is a very high-octane fuel with a high resistance to pre-ignition, says Olson. Power output for engines operating on NH3 is increased compared to the power output for gasoline and diesel fuel in the same engine. Combined, these properties allow for extremely high engine efficiencies for engines designed to take advantage of the charac teristics of NH3 fuel. There are also huge economic, environmental, and efficiency advantages associated with NH3 fuel. NH3 can be produced using air (for nitrogen), water (or any other source of hydrogen), and primary sources of energy (wind, solar, nuclear, coal, natural gas, etc.). The only significant emissions associated with NH3 are oxides of nitrogen, which can easily be controlled with NH3 via selective catalytic reduction. Delivery infrastructure costs for NH3 are orders-of-magnitude lower than hydrogen infrastructure costs and liquid NH3 contains 30 percent more hydrogen per unit volume than liquid hydrogen. In fact, NH3 is the second-most transported chemical in the world. We envision stationary engines as the anfangsbuchstabe application for NH3 fuel, followed by fleet vehicle conversions and eventual adoption by all transportation sectors, with the lone exception of air transportation applications, says Olson. Flexibility in both production and end-use applications, com bined with high efficiency and unmatched environmental performance, make NH3 fuel the optimal choice for replacement of fossil fuels. What Recruiters Wish Youd Stop Doing

What Recruiters Wish Youd Stop Doing What Recruiters Wish Youd Stop DoingPosted November 16, 2018, by JennyRecruiters can seem to occasionally be a little hard hitting with their approach to recruitment sometimes, but thats really because they work smart and are focused on getting their job done. They have to sift through multiple resumes every day to find the perfect match for their clients while screening you leid just for the job but also to ensure that you can represent them and their services well. They also need to juggle all of the numerous appointments and interviews with their clients and candidates and rely on you to do your part in the process well. Its not an easy job its also one where a lot of time, effort and reputability can be wasted through no fault of their own.We know that you wont be working for the recruiter, but it is the recruiter who will open doors, negotiate and liaise on your behalf to ensure that you can make your next professional move a hit. However, ther e are a few things recruiters hate, which can cause them to lose interest in working with you or even blacklisting you from their services. This isnt a great start. So we decided to give you the lowdown on what recruiters want you to know so that they can help you find the perfect job without getting in your own way (and theirs).Giving Them The Run-aroundGiving recruiters the runaround has to be at the top of the list of what recruiters hate. If they have contacted you about a position and left you a message, call them back, or if you have said youll call them in a few hours - call them.Dont make them wait.If you are serious about your job hunt and with working with the recruiter, then youll call them back swiftly. Recruiters want you to know that not doing so can make you look tardy (not a desirable characteristic) and you could potentially be loosing out on this and/or future positions. Missing Interviews or Cancelling Them At The Last MinuteIt doesnt matter what you are doing if yo u have scheduled an appointment with somebody and then you dont turn up - thats disrespectful and unfair. Everyones time is precious, and if you have done this you have just wasted somebody elses time who was prepared to spend some of it investing in youIts not only the recruiters time you waste but its also the representatives from the company who are offering a position and the recruiters reputation (its hardly surprising that this is one of the things that recruiters hate). If you are not interested in the position, say so, and be honest about it. If you have found another position call the recruiter and tell them the situation as soon as you know. The same applies for last minute cancellations - of course, rules bend in an emergency, but that should be the only reason you cancel at short notice. SloppinessIn this category, there are many instances of things that recruiters hate, and things that recruiters want you to know because it makes their life easier if you are aware. A la ck of preparation, incomplete or incorrect information, failing to provide the necessary paperwork, unprofessional portfolios, unsupported claims, tardiness, untidiness, errors on your resume, lack of professionalism are all classic pet peeves a recruiter has to deal with daily. Its a big no-no.How can your recruiter represent you if you cant even represent yourself? Its time to step up and be accountable, and you can do so by being organised, getting your paperwork in order, being where you should be at the right time and being fully prepared. Just like youd expect to be if you were employed by the company that they represent. If the recruiters cant see this in you how are they going to feel confident in presenting you to their client aka your potential employer? DishonestyWhat recruiters wont tell you is that if you are dishonest about whether youve already applied for a position they are discussing with you, or even about what you want, it just wastes their time. And one of the big gest things that recruiters hate is having their time wastedJust be honest with them. Say no when you want to say no, stand firm if they start to try to push you, say yes when you mean yes and stand by your word.Dont lie about whether youve already made contact with a company. Theyll find out anyway. Honesty is always the best policy it just makes things run smoothly for all parties involved - including youRecruiters want you to know that they are always trying to represent you well. If they think you can hold your own in a position they want to find you that position - thats how they get paid. But they also have to take care of their clients too and to do so they want you to work with them not against them. Remember, youre a team, all after the same end goal .... landing a position that fits you well and that youll thrive in. 7 tips you should do every day to help improve your life

7 tips you should do every day to help improve your life7 tips you should do every day to help improve your lifeOver the past 6 years I went fromIn 5-figures of debt and completely brokeStuck in a toxic relationshipUnsure of my purpose and mission in lifeWorking a job I hatedStruggling with fitness and healthTo now Running a 7-figure lifestyle business doing what I loveBeing in a healthy and fun relationship with an amazing womanOn my path and certain of my purposeBuilding the body of my dreamsAnd having an incredible social circleThese changes didnt happen overnight and they didnt happen by accident. They were the result of several small habits practiced consistently over time. Here are the 7 most important ones.1. Read a partieal growth or self-improvement bookSimply put, leaders are readers. If you want to grow into the person you want to be and achieve your goals, then you need to learn from the best of the best.Luckily, thousands of remarkable individuals have detailed the exact st eps they took to achieve success through their books and blogs.Commit to reading at least 15 minutes of a personal growth book or blog every day and I promise you will see results.Take action on what you learn and search for those one or two golden nuggets that can change your life.Looking for an inspiring way to start your day? Express self-loveYou cannot love and serve others if you dont first love yourself.Take time every day to express some form of self-love.Whether its taking a long bath at the end of the day and listening to your favorite album or simply going for a walk and thinking about your goals and dreams, do something every day just for you.The more you love yourself the better you will be for others.3. Break a sweat and get some sunshineIf you arent exercising regularly, then you are leaving at least 50% of your potential on the table.Period.I recommend that everyone gets out in the sunshine and exercises for at least 20 minutes a day. This will have a tremendous impact on your health, performance, mood, and confidence. When I committed to training consistently, my entire life changed.. And so will yours.4. Sleep 8+ hoursSleep is one of lifes miracle drugs. When you sleep, your body and brain repair themselves in a number of ways that simply arent possible without sufficient sleep. If youre currently stressed, depressed, or simply not performing at the levels you want, start placing an increased focus on getting a sufficient amount of high-quality sleep.Go to bed before 11 p.m., sleep in a dark room, stop eating and using electronics 90 minutes before bed, and I promise you will feel the difference.5. Do something you loveWhile this is another form of point 2 taking time every day to do something that you truly love is life changing.Whether its playing an instrument, vegging out with some Call of Duty, or painting your next masterpiece you need to prioritize your interests and hobbies. This will restore you mentally, emotionally and physically and allow you to tackle your obligations with greater ease and focus.6. Work for 60 minutes on YOUR dreamHeres an uncomfortable truth to consider. You are either building your dream or someone elses.Period.Take 60 minutes a day and focus on your dreams and aspirations.Whether its building your side hustle, working on your freedom business, recording your next album, or writing your next book you need to do something every day that moves you towards your ideal life and goals.7. Laugh your butt offLife is too short to take seriously.Learn to laugh at yourself and others.Watch sta nd-ups, go to comedy clubs, binge watch funny TV shows, do something every day that makes you laugh your butt off and enjoy your life on a deeper level. This post first appeared on Quora.
